Thanks for getting back to me.

We are using the default autocompleter (so matching creators to other creators rather than to users?) as adapted by the ORCID plugin to include ORCIDs.

As you say though, even when using the autocompleter, you should be able to edit the input and save that as new data, I assume? I can add a current creator to a record, using the autocompleter and then add an ORCID (valid or not) in the ORCID field. If I move on through the workflow, I don’t get any warnings e.g. about an invalid ORCID, but when I return to the Details stage in the workflow, the ORCID is no longer there.

I know that if you have the ORCID Support Advance plugin installed, it should grey out the creators ORCID field, so it can only be set if it is filled in from being associated with an existing creator in a live publication item.  If you only have the ORCID Support plugin installed, I think you should be able to manually add creators ORCIDs. 

I have just tested this on what I believe to be the latest version of ORCID Support (without ORCID Support Advance being installed) and I was able to save an ORCID, even though I typed in an invalid number (0000-1111-2222-3333, has a checksum mismatch).  I also tested this by adding a creator through the autocompleter and then manually adding the ORCID and this worked fine as well.  This is using a modified autocompleter that looks up user records rather than names/ORCIDs of creators who are already listed against existing live publication items.  However, the autocompleter you use should not effect what gets saved, if you make changes after you use the autocompleter, these should not be affected.   If you can tell what autocomplete you are using, I may be better able to help debug this problem.  Otherwise, without being able to see someone trying to add creators (and ORCIDs) in real-time, it could be difficult to work out where the problem lies.

I have an additional question regarding the ORCID Support Plugin.

 

We have installed the plugin and added ORCIDs to some of the users in the repository.

 

We are finding that when adding a new item with ORCIDs in the creators field, only the ORCIDs where the creator’s id matches a user id with an ORCID, are saved to the eprint. ORCIDs added to the creators field for users who do not yet have that ORCID added to their user account, are not saved.

 

Is this expected behaviour i.e. are creator ORCIDs only saved to an eprint if the associated user record has an ORCID?

 

For context, we use Pure as our CRIS and export full text records to EPrints using the Pure connector. We are now trying to include creator/editor ORCIDs in the XML export but as our EPrints user records do not have ORCIDs apart from some test ones, the ORCID data is lost.

The ORCID Support plugin can be used without the Advance plugin. Its main role is to add a new ORCID metafield to the repository which can then be used as part of the creators and/or editors fields, and in user profiles. 

 

The plugin also helps with validating ORCIDs to ensure they meet the correct format, and with displaying them (including adding the little green ORCID badges to citations).
