When you've faster disk (ssd or at least 100 - 200 MB/s r/w) and enough RAM (16 GB is ok) and bandwidth (*) it should work. 

If you use virtual machine, give at least 4 cores.
(*) you can use your firewall statistics or you logs to calculate how much bandwidth you need and you will need guessing how much files and records you'll have in the next n years and how much you repository will became popular (consider that half of the bandwidth is used by bots and search engines).
