never used in EPrints, but a while ago i was looking for a library to render formulas in browsers.
http://www.mathjax.org/ seems to me the most versatile, using html+css or mathml native support if available.
I think that you should try to import the mathjax _javascript_ in your eprints and check abstract rendering.
