Hi Alan, everyone... I tried setting the language to English or leaving it blank, that didn't seem to change anything.
I'm happy to report, however, that very soon after I sent my message, I got it to work and sort properly.
What I think did it in the end was that I needed to go up to the parent node, and make sure to click "Save" on that, and the parent of the parent node, and click on "Save" on that. It got sorted after I did that - but I don't have proof that this is what actually
did it.
Bottom line, so this message going into the eprints archive is potentially useful: if you encounter this issue, do try to navigate (using the admin > edit subject interface) back up to parent nodes, and click "Save" on them, even if the change was reported
as already saved before at the node you added.
Tomasz

Pure top of the head…
Does the new item or the existing items have any languages flagged? Could it be sorting by language before the render value?
