CAUTION: This e-mail originated outside the University of Southampton. Hi Nigel, In addition to what Peter has suggested (all good stuff!), if Apache fails to start entirely, there should be something in the error log: /var/log/apache2/error_log to indicate why. If you need some help understanding what's in the log, we should be able to assist! Cheers, John -----Original Message----- From: eprints-tech-request@ecs.soton.ac.uk <eprints-tech-request@ecs.soton.ac.uk> On Behalf Of Peter Edwards Sent: 07 July 2025 16:17 To: eprints-tech@ecs.soton.ac.uk Subject: Re: [EP-tech] Unable to get a migrated repository to work on new server CAUTION: External Message. Hi Nigel, The first place I would look is apparmor - I've had my fingers burned so many times configuring RHEL with EPrints and SELinux that my first check if something doesn't work is ausearch -m avc -ts recent. Apparmor is the Ubuntu version of SELinux... There is an article which goes through the configuration of nginx in apparmor here: https://eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fjumpcloud.com%2Fblog%2Fhow-to-configure-apparmor-for-security-debian-ubuntu&data=05%7C02%7Ceprints-tech%40ecs.soton.ac.uk%7C3894e3066e924fcfbccc08ddbd6e7794%7C4a5378f929f44d3ebe89669d03ada9d8%7C0%7C0%7C638875004365186903%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&sdata=AQKcZyop2qUGbDABPPn43vcLTr6B%2Fxgv5ad1m5MKhwg%3D&reserved=0 This should give you an idea about where to look for the configuration and how to use it. There is a page on the EPrints wiki with details of SELinux configuration which tells you what kinds of permissions are needed for different directories, etc. https://eur03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwiki.eprints.org%2Fw%2FEPrints_and_SELinux&data=05%7C02%7Ceprints-tech%40ecs.soton.ac.uk%7C3894e3066e924fcfbccc08ddbd6e7794%7C4a5378f929f44d3ebe89669d03ada9d8%7C0%7C0%7C638875004365212286%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&sdata=C9V91tmSsjwL2tMcFFzfqqGkm%2B0kDdn5d6HxeOp2Lxo%3D&reserved=0 This should give you some hints on what may need to be configured in apparmor to allow the service to start. Hope this helps, Peter Peter Edwards Application Support Analyst University of Leeds ________________________________________ From: eprints-tech-request@ecs.soton.ac.uk <eprints-tech-request@ecs.soton.ac.uk> on behalf of Nigel Boeg <N.Boeg@lse.ac.uk> Sent: 07 July 2025 15:47 To: eprints-tech@ecs.soton.ac.uk Subject: [EP-tech] Unable to get a migrated repository to work on new server CAUTION: External Message. Hello List, Created a new Ubuntu server with Ubuntu 22. Installed eprints 3.3.15 and migrated the Database and Repository from an old server. I followed the instructions on the eprints wiki page, and I just keep getting errors. One of the errors is that the Apache service fails to start. I've checked that all the necessary .conf files have been created. Any advice from the list will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. All the best. Nigel.
