[EP-tech] Importing PhD theses

CAUTION: This e-mail originated outside the University of Southampton.

Hi

I wonder whether anyone has idea about how I can best deal with PHD theses in my implementation of Eprints 3.4

My aim is not a full repository, but a metadata catalogue. This means that nearly all my data is collected from journals, theses and one conference series, with little else to augment it. I am dealing with small, specialized subset of data and not storing archival material, just URLs to other repositories.

In dealing with doctoral theses, I am running into a few problems.

  1. Many of the theses I am logging are described as “Unpublished PhD thesis”. But some are indeed formally published (particularly from Sweden and Germany). Many are DBS, EdD, DSc, DM, Dtech, and so on.  Eprints seems only to allow for a very limited range of Diploma, Masters, Doctoral, Post-doctoral and Other. Similarly, thesis name is restricted to MPhil, PhD, DPhil and Other. These options are not very helpful. I have tried to adapt the configuration, unsuccessfully, but all that I have managed to do is to get “['eprint_fieldopt_thesis_type_Unpublished PhD thesis' not defined]” appearing in the Item Type. I think what I need is to parse the thesis type in the RIS import routine, to pass the Thesis type, Publication status, and name of qualification to the right fields, but I am struggling with this.
  2. Another aspect of the PhD theses is that I often have the supervisor’s name, and this comes in the A3 tag in the RIS file. While the name is brought into Eprints, the Contribution remains UNSPECIFIED. I have tried to set this to advisor, but I think there is an array somewhere that limits what this contribution might be.
  3. As this is not a repository in the usual sense, I would like to remove all mention of Email UNSPECIFIED next to names. I am not storing email addresses and even if I were, I would not be displaying them. I would love to know how to remove this aspect from views, generally.

I hope some can help guide me through these changes.

Thank you in advance

Best wishes
