If I hadn't already done other things, I'd have tried the Bootstrap module - it's effective and a great starting point for institutional branding (I put it on a test instance and it just worked).

This is an area where bringing render functions out of the core functionality of EPrints would be very useful in enabling people to write effective responsive styles for EPrints - at the moment David's approach in the Bootstrap module is the lightest-weight way of achieving a mobile-friendly EPrints that I'm aware of.
